Social upheavals are the subject of the installation works by artist duo Birgit Auf der Lauer and Caspar Pauli. In their exhibition Bizim Deniz (Turkish: our sea), the focus is on the human figure, which sometimes flits across canvases as shadows, forms empty spaces in landscapes or takes on ornamental-graphic features. All figures are part of narratives that are currently moving many people: stories of crossing borders and disappearing. The exhibition shows two shadow theaters that approach the theme of escape aid on different temporal levels. Walter Benjamin’s smuggling across the Pyrenees and the work of Turkish and West Berlin smugglers are the central stories of the two installations.
