As the title reveals, the focus of Material Matters – The Aesthetics of Utility is the material of the various works in the exhibition. This intensive examination of the material and form of everyday objects, as well as patterns in public space, is based on the artist’s 2019 residency in Pune, India. Back in Berlin, Premke, who is based in Neukölln, continued her research into the materials and forms of everyday and industrial objects, inspired by the cultural diversity of the district. The artist’s main concern is the question of whether we build familiarity with objects and materials through sounds and haptics or through cultural contexts. The various objects in the exhibition are everyday items, most of which are brightly coloured. They move slowly; the sounds they make are quiet; they demand close listening and feeling of the materials. Can the objects and the materials be detached from their context through movement and sound?
