Formless, largely amorphous and unstructured, unidentifiable and almost unnameable—these are qualities that five Berlin artists address in painting and sculpture. Yet, all the works reaffirm that every dab of paint has form, every brushstroke has structure, every discarded lump of clay has shape. Beginning with waste material from the everyday world, by-products of studio work, or diffuse emotional states: in the clusters of lines, streaks of paint, lumpy spot-like structures and folded forms, repeated transformations can be seen. Planned and aleatoric work processes stand on equal footing, side by side, as does the reciprocal influence of digital and analogue media. The five artists explore the limits of the recognisable and nameable and work beyond the usual repertoire of perception. They offer viewers a range of associations based on collective cultural codes as well as individual worlds of visual experience.
